About Nikolaev.

 Nikolaev. From three sides washed by waters Ingula and Southern Bug, from height of the bird's flight is similar to the opened palm inverted to the sun. The naval and ship city, a favourite child of prince Potemkina-Taurian, incorporated by it in 1789 in a fine place, on surprisingly picturesque peninsula at merge Ingula and Southern Bug, it could become in due course “ southern capital ” to the Russia which has cut through at last a window to the Black Sea open space, in the Mediterranean. However the history has disposed differently. Nikolaev could become city - shipyard, a cradle of the Black Sea fleet, one of the centers of shipbuilding of Russia, and then and Soviet Union. Such specificity has left traces on destiny, character and even external shape of Nikolaev. Nevertheless, the city grew, developed, veins the life. Today it is the large regional center of Ukraine with полумиллионным the population, the industrial giants known all over the world, the advanced social sphere, these are the wide, planted trees and shrubs prospectuses, it is the center full of charm, they are handsome men Southern Bug and Ingul.

It is the ancient ground, the fertile south of Ukraine. Here the hot steppe meets blue shaft of Black sea, tart smells of steppe grasses mix up with a salty wind of sea open spaces. The ground Prichernomorskaja remembers Scythians, ancient Greeks, slavic tribes, ногайские hordes, free Zaporozhye cossacks... To this day years downpours wash away splinters of the Greek amphoras, the turned black coins, clay turkish and cossack tubes, other relicts of an antiquity which help to recreate a history of Nikolaev step by step from the local ground. 

But intensive settling of the Nikolaev peninsula began in last quarter XV ІІІ centuries already after clearing Northern Black Sea Coast of turkish conquerors and an exit of the Russian state to Black sea. The fleet was necessary for Russia. Before our city has received the official status, it was called rather modestly - shipyard on Ingul.
. The place it was in a mouth of the river Ingul, at its confluence of estuary Bugsky. In the afternoon of the basis of New Shipyard, in a consequence becoming Nikolaev, it is considered on April, 27, 1789. This number dates Potyomkin Faleevu's instruction " To start shipyard on Ingul.

It has received the name one year later, after victorious storm of Ochakov by the Russian armies under A.V.Suvorova's command. Ochakov has been taken in December, 1788, in day of Sacred Nikolay, the defender of seamen. In its honour also have named new city. With Sacred Nikolay's name, one of the most esteemed sacred in Ukraine and in Russia, the first church constructed in city in 1790, and the first ship are connected also. The 46-gun frigate “ Sacred Nikolay ” has been launched in August of the same year, and in July, 1791 near cape Kaliakrija it has received the first baptism of fire. 

Opening in 1862 in city of commercial port was an incitement to transformation of Nikolaev to the big trading port. This fact has found the display in the arms of city which has been authorized in 1883 and is restored in 1997. So, in the project “ the Note about the arms of a military - seaport of Nikolaev ”- the manager by stamp branch of department the Senate it has been specified: “ As the city of Nikolaev is one of the mainest ports of Southern Russia a staff I believe to represent in the arms of this city moreover the ship ”. The Nikolaev port took the third place after Petersburg and Odessas on volume of trade with abroad, and on export of a grain which suppliers were steppe provinces, - the first place in the country. Nikolaev becomes the big industrial centre in the south of Ukraine.
